Quit Smoking Naturally
3 Ways to Quit Smoking Naturally
So you've made the decision to quit the habit - well done. That first step may be the most important one, and now you'll have to decide on a method. If you are like me you may have a preference to quit smoking the natural way, after all, my intention was for a healthier lifestyle, and not to substitute one bad thing for another.
I'm sure patches and gum and pills of all sorts have their place but I have seen friends who simply substituted nicotine from a cigarette for nicotine in a stick of gum. Lots of sticks of gum.
With a bit of planning and a lot of support from friends and family, you can stop smoking naturally and never take up the habit again. Here are the three ways to do it -
1. Cold Turkey
If you have a lot of willpower and a firm desire to quit smoking, you possibly could be able to do it cold turkey. Quitting cold turkey means that you simply stop -- no intermediate steps, just going from your regular habit to no smoking at all.
Certain individuals that metabolize nicotine relatively slowly are more likely to succeed by quitting cold turkey. This is because they are not as physically addicted to nicotine as other smokers are. People with a higher dependence on nicotine may find they need to use a nicotine substitute such as patches or gum.
This is the method I chose, although I only managed it on the third attempt. I had to put some firm rules in place, such as not socializing with friends who smoked, and not hanging in out in bars and clubs where people smoked. This had a serious impact on my social life, but it was worth it. Now I have no desire at all to smoke again. But this method is not for everyone.
3. Cutting Down
Rather than quitting cold turkey, some people prefer to gradually reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke each day. In order for this to work you need to have a plan to reduce your smoking by a certain amount each day and a goal for the day when you want to be completely smoke-free.
There are many strategies you can use. You could smoke one less cigarette each day; you could delay smoking the first cigarette of the day by a greater amount each day; or you could limit your smoking to a certain number of cigarettes within a three hour period.
The trouble with this method is that it is so easy to justify having one more, or just not really committing to giving up and being half hearted about it. Half hearted doesn't work. In most cases, this method is just an exercise in self delusion, and one can feel guilty about the ensuing failure that usually results and cause you to smoke even more. This method is not recommended for this reason, and has a very low success rate.
3. Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis may be the ideal way to quit smoking naturally as it involves no drugs or nicotine substitutes, and also can address any underlying stress factors or psychological reasons for the smoking habit and the reason that you feel the need to continue smoking.
It is a simple procedure and has proven to be very effective amongst those who are determined to quit, and who complete the recommended number of sessions.
A Healthy Life
Whichever method you choose, you may nned to think about quitting smoking in the context of your whole life, and your health in general. A regular exercise routine is an essential part of healthy living. If you have not exercised previously, build up to it gradually. Rather than starting on an ambitious two-mile jog every morning, begin by going for short walks, then longer walks. As your stamina increases and your health improves you can add more vigorous activities to your exercise routine.
Healthy eating is also very important for regaining the health that may have been lost from your smoking habit. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits and cut down on fatty meats and foods high in saturated fats like fast food and desserts. Eating good quality natural fruits and vegetables can help eliminate toxins from the body faster which makes it easier to overcome your nicotine habit.
A symptom of nicotine withdrawal is irritability. Whenever you feel this way or are craving a cigarette, go for a brisk walk. This helps clear your mind and overcome the desire for nicotine.
It is important to find natural ways to relax. Many people are tempted to smoke when exposed to stressful situations. It is far healthier to learn natural relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation. Nicotine withdrawal may also cause headaches which can be relieved by hot baths or gentle body movements like rolling the head.
You can quit smoking in a totally natural way, and it will be easier if you follow some of the guidelines mentioned above. Remember - millions of people before you have already given up - you can too.
